Today though I thought I'd toss this up here for an appetizer of sorts.
Something you may or may not know: I've never been much of a reader. There are only two series of books that I've ever been committed to (Confessions of a Shopaholic, and obviously The Hunger Games), and only two books I've ever re-read (Emma by Jane Austen, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett- also The Hunger Games will happen too).
I don't actually finish nearly as many books as I start. I usually just read to pass time, and while I do enjoy it now while I'm reading, there aren't many things that stick with me so much that I need to keep reading. Hence I usually have a few books on the go, each from different genres and for different moods. So these are the 5 that I have on the go right now.
(1) Emma by Jane Austen. This is a classic in my books, and one that I just can't seem to get enough of. I get lost in it every time I read it. I think Emma reminds me of me in many ways. Intelligent, but not committed enough to anything in particular. Usually mature and kind, but known to make mistake due to my conviction that I am always right. At least until I met my Mr. Knightly. My level headed husband who grounds me a little, and humbles me often (kindly of course).
(2) Shopaholic & Baby by Sophie Kinsella. As I told you, I do enjoy the Shopaholic series. I haven't read them in a few years now, but when I saw the last one that I haven't gotten to yet, for only $0.99 at the thrift store, on a day when I happened to have raging baby fever, I just had to start it and add it to the list.
(3) Jule & JuliaI by Julie Powell. When I first saw this movie, is when I decided to start blogging. It was my inspiration and my goal. I hate cooking, very very much, and don't know that it will ever be a love of mine, but I am getting a little better. I do love projects though. She needed something to fill her life with excitement and adventure and accomplishment and I know I've searched a time or two for such things; haven't we all? So I decided I should finally start reading this book, and that maybe in the process I might be inspired just enough to find something that will last.
(4) The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. This is in the self-help category of my book list. Eric and I started reading it when a friend and co-worker recommended it to him for help at work. It's all based on the concept that people are often mistaken when they assume that the next accomplishment will make them happy. His theory is that being happy, even with little things in life, leads to an attitude and path to success. Very interesting points and theories!
(5) My Life With Elvis by Becky Yancey. This is my hidden treasure of the summer. I got stuck for about an hour in a small used bookstore last night in Wolfville. I fought over and over between I think 5 or 6 books. Each were very different from the next and I could not make up my mind, and eventually just had to pick one (actually 2 because I just couldn't make it to 1). Julie&Julia was one, and this was the other. I started this one as soon as I got home, and I am in love. I love a good biography, and this is a good biography. It's written by a woman of her brief but exciting personal encounters with Elvis, and then later her longer lasting professional relationship with him and Graceland. If you like Elvis, if you like his music, or if you just find that time era fascinating (as I do), I recommend it. I'm guessing it's hard to find, and I know you'll get funny looks if you're reading in the park or on the bus or anywhere public, but it's worth it all. I promise.

One of my goals in life is to have a very accomplished bookshelf. One
where everyone, of all ages and all styles, can go to find a book to amuse
them; even if just for the first 20, 50 or 100 pages. That's a real goal
of mine. This may be what some of you count as an amateur or immature beginning, but hey, I'm enjoying it. If no one else does, I am going to love my bookcase someday.
