21 Day Fix - Day 5

I have decided to participate in the 21 Day Fix. I have gained weight since slowing down on breast feeding, and I am just not happy with my body the way it is right now.
I visited with my doctor a few weeks ago, before I stopped nursing, and she said that I need to work on getting my body back to being my own before I think about having another baby. She prompted me to remember what being pregnant was really like - it was a challenge. At least in those first three months or so, growing a baby is really really hard work for your body. I started to remember all the nausea, and the days I couldn't make it to work, and the evenings I came home so exhausted I turned it in for the night by 7:00PM. A part of me had forgotten just how bad those things really were - especially since everything after that was a breeze for me. And to imagine doing all that with a toddler running around. No. I needed to change some things first.
So here I am. It started on Pinterest, then with a good chat with some girlfriends, and then Jordena, and then the grocery store. And before I knew it I was getting started on something huge for me. I have never ever in my life stuck with a diet or workout plan - or really much of any personal development plan. That isn't to say I've never started them - boy have I ever started them - I've just never finished them or seen them through to the end. This time I am determined. More than loosing the weight and toning my tummy, I need to promote a healthy lifestyle for myself and my family. This is how I think I will be able to do it.

Things I am hoping to accomplish:
1. I would ultimately love to see myself in at least my postpartum body again.  I understand and am aware that not all things can pop back to the way they were before, and I'm not expecting that. I felt great after having Cecelia and I was so proud of the accomplishments I'd made that I was excited about my body and proud of it. I want to feel that way again, and I definitely wouldn't mind looking like that again.
2. As mentioned, I was to promote healthy habits for myself and my family. I like the outline of the 21 Day Fix, because it really does have you eating mostly things that you already eat or have buried somewhere in the back of your cupboard meaning to try some day.
3. I really need to get in to a regular routine of exercise and physical activity.  Physical activity helps me feel great, it just is so hard to get started for some reason. I am determined to exercise for the 30 minutes a day recommended by this program, and to continue some kind of routine after that.
4. I would like to change my perspective on health from something I should or have to or need to do, to something I just do.

This program has not been easy for me. One of my biggest challenges is actually eating enough food - believe it or not. I often get to 4:00 in the afternoon and think, "Why am I so cranky? Why am I all of a sudden so short with Cecelia? Why is my body slowing down?". More often than not, the answer is that I've had nothing but a protein drink and maybe a bowl of Cheerios for the day.
Two things: First, this diet is actually making me more hungry than not eating at all ever did. As I'm putting more in to my body, I am finding that it needs even more from me. Second is that when I get really hungry I get really nauseous. When I get really nauseous, it gets harder to eat food - especially vegetables of any kind for some reason.
I am really finding it hard to remember and force myself to eat when I'm not used to it, as well as squeezing in all those portions while feeling a little queezy.
To be perfectly honest, I have not felt better since starting the Fix - I have felt worse. My energy levels seem lower, I am hungry more of the time, and I am feeling a little sick. I am really hoping - and honestly believe - that this is my body reacting to trying to kick those old habit it's become so comfortable with. It's almost as if I'm going through mild withdrawal symptoms, and it's awful. Last night it all caught up with me. I got home very hungry and tired. I ate some eggs and toast for dinner, then got Cecelia bathed and in to bed. Then I finally got to my workout at around 9:15 PM - pretty exhausted to start with. It was cardio, which I have never been very strong in. I got through the workout alright, but as soon as I stopped moving the room started spinning and I basically laid down in my workout clothes until my husband came home - about 1.5 hours later. He helped me get into bed and I was excited to fall asleep and sleep it off. Well that didn't go according to plan. I ended up in the bathroom at about 3:30 in the morning with him by my side. He patted my back and said "You don't have to throw up to reach your target". I giggled. Then I did it anyway, to which he said "Wo! There goes pretty much everything you've eating since you started this diet." Thanks babe. I realized that I've been pushing myself too hard, too soon. I want to loose the weight and I want to see results, and so I am trying so so hard to follow the plan as closely as I can. Modifying the plan to fit my needs and my body is not failing at it. In only 4 days I've already learned some really great tips and tricks and habits that I hope I will be able to hold on to, but I am not doing this to train intensely for anything or to get totally toned muscles, I am just trying to get healthy. Pushing myself as hard as I did last night is not healthy.
This is my progress so far, and a few of my feelings and takes on the whole thing. Stay tuned for more. I will be sticking with it! What's 21 days, right?

It's a New Year!

Honestly, I don't think any year will ever shake us up as much as 2014 did (in a good way). Needless to say, I am sad to see it go. Cecelia joining our family was the happiest, most exciting and most rewarding adventure I have faced yet, and the great part is that it will continue to be. 2015 may not be looking as glitzy and glamourous as 2014 was, but it will bring its own adventure, and I am looking forward to it.
I'm hoping 2015 beings me two new sisters, a home of our own, an officially designated CPA for a husband, and maybe even a second baby bump. Mostly I know that it will be another year filled with Eric and I learning together, Cecelia growing, and fun times with friends and family. That's enough to look forward to I think.
I am usually one to take advantage of the new year and to start setting goals and making changes and plans, but this year I'm not really in that spirit. I am taking our lives day by day, and while there are things that I can see that definitely need changing, I not going to try to take those all on right way, just because the year has switched from '14 to '15.
I was inspired this morning looking at a post from a friend of mine on Instagram. She posted a word for the year. I really liked the idea of one general concept driving my year and being my motivation, as opposed to specific goals - at least for now. I think that having the spirit of one attitude in the back of my head will encourage me to make the changes I'd like to see, just a bit better than specific dates and deadlines.
I talked it over with Eric and started to come up with a  word. I started with what I'd really like to do a bit more, which is relax. I'd really like to slow down a bit more and soak things up in the moment and not always be rushing around to get things done, or worrying about what my life looks like from the outside. Taking pictures is a really hard thing for me - and is just one small example of this. I would love to take more pictures, but sometimes I think I am taking them for the wrong reasons, and so I get discouraged and don't take the camera out as often as I should. After a little bit of back and forth I realized that my word for this year is ENJOY. I really want to take time to enjoy what I'm doing this year - even if it's busy and fast paced.

House Hunting

Last weekend we finally decided to pull the trigger and call a realtor. We have been discussing our need to move from this place we're in for quite some time. We love our apartment, but our floors are polished concrete and with Cecelia starting to move it won't work for much longer for us. We decided that it was time for us to look at buying our own home. So on Saturday night we had a realtor come by and meet with us. We chose the criteria most important to us - location and budget - and started to see what was available in that area. We were looking mostly at townhouses and condos close to the LRT stations.
Over the course of the week, we somehow started to take a look at single family homes. We have heard so much about what a waste of money it is to pay condo fees, and so on and so forth, and so we decided to branch out and get pre-approved for dollar number not including condo fees. With that number in mind I started to look at homes. I found one that seemed really wonderful. It was 6 bedrooms total (altthough the basement was basically unfinished, and 3 of them were down there), two bathrooms, an updates kitchen, plenty of space, in our current neighbourhood, and close to the LRT. It seemed perfect, so I went and took a look at it, and it really was. I got so excited about it, it was all I could talk about for a couple of days. I convinced Eric to go and take a look at it too, and then we were both in love. We came home though and started to work on the numbers...This was at the top of the number that we'd been approved for, and working on the figure, we just could not be comfortable with that number. It was too tight.
The rest of the week I just had this nagging feeling that this was our house though, and I couldn't shake it. I thought about it over and over, all day long. I tried and tried to come up with ways to make the numbers work in my mind. I finally called my mom and tried to talk it over with her. Being married to an accountant sometimes makes me feel that he has the final say in all our financial decisions. It makes me kind of feel like I don't carry much weight, but I just could not shake the feeling I had - something I knew would be hard for Eric to understand and take seriously. So I chatted with my mom for quite some time, and we finally developped a solid plan - we would put in an offer at a lower price, use the rest of the amount we'd been approved for to renovate, and create a second suite in the basement of the house. The house was perfect for it, and it was a great plan. I was so excited about it - I worked all afternoon that day on a sales pitch to my husband. (I even practiced it on my brother-in-law and his girlfriend.) When I got home (it was a Friday night) Cecelia was asleep and so I put her in bed and said to Eric "I really need to talk to you about something". Then I just laid it on him - all about how this was a risk, but I think it was worth it; this could be our chance to get ahead, when he's a bit afraid we'll always be behind; this was something that would be exciting and teach us so much and we really good for us and our family. He was actually sold. He had to mull it over in his mind for the evening and into Saturday morning (which was killing me), but he was pretty much convinced. I felt so good about the whole experience and was so ready to proceed - so excited about my new found courage and determination.
We took the idea over to Eric's dad - who is very logical and thorough in the planning stage of things - and asked for his advice. I said to Eric on the way over "can we please just take your dad's advice as advice, and not as absolute truth. We'll talk it over with him, but then the decision is ours to make." He agreed. Well, Trevor was just as sold as Eric - probably more. We chatted for a little while, and he said "let's go - you guys should put an offer in". We called our realtor to go see it one more time. We brought the whole family this time. Verona even did cart wheels in the living room - which is what I did in the first house my parents bought when I was little. I was so excited, and so at peace. This was our home.
We went home for Thanksgiving dinner with the family and decided we would write up the offer that night after dinner. That was a fun experience - writing up an offer on our first home. There was so much to go over, and so many details to consider. It was a good thing we had a realtor who understood it all there with us. It was very nerve wracking.
Then we got the call...an hour after he left we got the call that someone else had put an offer in right before us and it had been accepted. My heart sank - I was so upset and disappointed. How could that be? It felt so right. The house sat on the market for a couple of months, and was at the new price for 25 days before we got to it. Then all of a sudden someone decided on the same day as us that it was their house - and it couldn't be ours anymore.
We decided to negotiate a back-up offer in case that one fell through at the conditions stage. We went back and forth for a little while, bu the seller just wouldn't budge on her numbers. We wouldn't have been able to afford it at that price anyway, so I guess it just wasn't going to happen for us.
I spent that night and the next day feeling like this was still our house - something was going to happen - some miracle. But it didn't - and it probably won't - and that's okay. We were fasting for this, and so was our family, but this was someone else's turn to find their dream home instead. We will just have to keep looking for ours.
This was not a wasted pursuit though - I learned a lot about myself and about my feelings and about trying to communicate and share those with my husband. This little adventure brought us closer together and strengthened our relationship - and that is nothing to be disappointed about.

Letter to Grandma

Momma,
I am so glad that you got to visit with us and share all you did with us. I am so glad you were here to share in the experience of Cecelia's birth with me.
You know how I used to think of being a woman and giving birth and even getting married, but the real truth is that there is nothing greater. I used to think that you were silly for just wanting to be a mom, but the truth is there is nothing more rewarding. I used to think you were crazy when you said that you enjoyed giving birth, but the truth is there is nothing more empowering. I used to think you were simple to assume that that's what we should/would want as well, but the truth is that every loving parent wants what's going to bring their children the most happiness and joy and once you've done it for yourself, you know that that thing is family.
That really is what it's all about. Heavenly Father send us here to learn to become like Him. Our ultimate goal is to receive all that He has, and I am more and more convinced that so much of that is His power to create - create life, create worlds, create joy.
So I take back every snarky comment, every time I looked down on you and every time I fought against what you knew to be the best thing for me, becuase I am starting to understand what you felt for me, and there is nothing in the world like it and no way it could ever want to do harm.
I love you so much and am so grateful for all the joy, love, fear, anxiety, hope and aspiration you've felt on my behalf.
I did love always having you handy to help out in those first couple of weeks. I will always remember and appreciate the time you spent here - teaching me all you could squeeze in about how to be a parent. When to worry and when to let her be; how to breast feed and what a normal belly button looks like; that crying is okay, but thinking I'm a bad mother is not. I learned a lot from you while you were here, but really I've been learning from you my whole life.
Now it's time for Cecelia and I to figure it out on our own, just as you had to with me. I have enjoyed these last couple of days with her and look forward to our journey ahead.
love always,
Katherinexoxo

2013 Year in Review

Here are a few of my favourite or most memorable moments from 2013.
We started our own small business - a commercial cleaning company
I got the worst flew I have ever had and was in bed for a full two weeks
Eric won $1,000 for an accounting case competition at school.
The penny went out of circulation.
We took our first Calgary staycation for Valentine's Day and realized all over again how much we love this city we live in.
We served in the nursery in our ward for about 6 months and had a ton of fun doing it. It was sad to move from that ward.
We finally moved out of Eric's parents' basement - hopefully for good. We met with a mortgage broker as well and thought about buying, but we are just renting. We are loving our place.
We bought grown up real furniture for our place. This is our couch.
And a king size bed, which we are very excited about as well. We are kind of bed snobs now.
I was called to serve with the Young Women in our new ward, which I love even more than nursery if you can believe it.
Eric graduated from university with his BBA in Accounting.
My dad turned 50 and we took a trip home to Halifax to surprise him for his party.
Then we went to NYC as an anniversary, graduation, last summer without kids (without really knowing that for sure) trip.

When we got home from that trip I spent a week sick and tired and at the end of that week we were surprised to find out that a little baby was growing inside me - I was about 6 weeks along when we found out.
We ran the Calgary colour run - except I didn't actually run because I was 13 weeks pregnant and really really sick. That's when we decided to let everyone find out.
I finally made friends with (and rekindled friendships with) some really great girls. I have been lacking in girlfriends since getting married and moving to Calgary. I finally found a good group of girls who do good things and are good friends to have. Eric did the same with a few good guys and we've enjoyed spending time on ourselves and doing things we like separately for the first real time since we've been married.
Eric started his real accounting job at Grant Thornton, and then stated his designation. It kept him very very busy for his first module.
We finally got Eric a real wedding band - he finally picked one out. I had to get a ring on that finger so that no cute accounting girls at Grant Thornton get any ideas.
We got Costco memberships! Our very own.
We hosted people at our house for Thanksgiving - all our east coast friends who live here now with us. I still didn't cook though - I wouldn't dare try that yet.
One of my favourite parts about this year was setting up for Christmas. I love decorating my house and have so so much enjoyed making it my own this year. Setting up our very first Christmas tree together this year, and putting up garland and a wreath and mistletoe of my very own was probably one of the highlights of my year.
2013 was the biggest year Eric and I have had together, and probably the biggest I can remember. We have so many great things that got started for us this year and that will bring much more happiness and excitement for us in 2014. I am really excited for where Eric and I are together, and for what we have enjoyed and accomplished individually this year. I am of course excited for our coming baby, and for all the other bumps and surprises that may come along the way.

Giving Thanks

I love Thanksgiving! It's just about tied with Christmas in my books. My most favourite family traditions and activities actually come from Thanksgiving in my home growing up. I miss my family most at this time of year, and the next couple of months are tough to get through without them.
I am so grateful for my family. I am grateful for the great things they are doing, and so much love I am feeling from them. I am so grateful that the baby inside of me is already more loved than a child could hope to be. I am grateful for members of my family just working so hard to do good things. I love them all no matter where they are, and will always count them among my most cherished blessings.
As for the start of new holidays in my new home - dinner with my in-laws was on Sunday and was delicious as always. Eric and I spent the afternoon at the park with Jordan and his kids, and I am grateful for them and their sweet spirits in our family gatherings. It is so nice to have little ones around. I am grateful for the circle of life, and for the divine blessing of the family unit. There is so much to learn from those who go before, and sometimes even more to learn from those coming up behind us. The family is the perfect contraption to teach us how to love, how to live and sometimes how to endure struggles and develop patience.
Speaking of families, and being grateful for them, I could not be more grateful to be starting my own family with this guy. I am grateful for him. He has so many traits that I admire and love, and his strength and character are admirable and inspiring. Eric is genuinely a good man. He works hard, he is full of integrity, he is patient and strong, and he is also so kind and sensitive. He is my perfect man. I know he will make a great father, and I am so excited already watching him grow in to that role. This year I am grateful for how involved he has been with my pregnancy. Since day one I have only ever cleaned up my own vomit one time, that's been nice! But also, I love seeing his face light up when he feels the baby move, or hearing him be interested in bonding with our baby, and always making sure I do the same.  I know he loves me because he tries so hard to take care of me, and to make sure that I do the same for myself.

Monday brought dinner and friends to our house. I did not cook, don't worry. Michelle did most of that, and she was amazing - we just used my home and dishes and table. We had an East Coast Thanksgiving at our place. The summer before I moved from Halifax I became very close friends with 3 really great girls, and slowly they have all joined me out here. We are all growing up and our lives have all gone different ways, but when we get together it feels just like old times. They are the girls I feel I will always be able to count on, and I am grateful for that. I am grateful for good friends who do good things, and who make me feel good. I am grateful for the ties that have brought all of us together, and kept us together. They are great friends in the Gospel!
Babies due one day apart - one boy and one unknown
Thank you to everyone and everything in my life that make me happy. I love you all, and really hope you know how much you are appreciate, respected and loved. I sent out a couple of thank you cards this year, and with this made a goal: I hope to make those in my life feel this more often, and not just at this time or year. I know it's cliche, but without so many of you I would not be the person I am now and that deserves respect and thanks all the time.
