One of my good friends Laura (and one of the only readers of this blog - hey Laura) is having a baby in September. Yay! I am so excited for her to have a baby the same year as me, along with our friend Vanessa who has one in January. It will be so fun and also incredibly helpful to have people going through the same stages at the same time. Although it seems like it is taking forever for that little baby to get ready to meet us, by a couple years from now everything we're doing will be closer to the same, and it will be so great to have that support from each other. Tonight was her birthday and so we went to dinner with her and her husband for the big baby gender reveal.
I have really been getting boy vibes from Laura's belly, and I'm not that crazy because apparently she has been too. I even wore a blue shirt, and dressed Cecelia in the same. I was certain I was right.
As it turns out though, I was horribly wrong. I should have known - I got the boy vibes from Cecelia as well for the first 3/4 of the pregnancy. It looks like baby Dominic is going to be the little stud of the group. We have another little girl joining our crew in late September!

Colour Me Rad!
On the weekend Eric and I ran the 5K Colour Me Rad run here in Calgary (which we are pretty sure was not actually 5K, but that worked out better for me anyway). Getting there was a bit of hastle, and usualy when that happens it tends to ruin fun things for us - which is a bit sad, but so often very true. This time it did not. We had so much fun! I couldn't really run because I've been so sick this pregnancy that I haven't been able to train at all, and so I haven't been able to get comfortable running. They say that you're supposed to be able to carry on a conversation while you're working out at the beginning of pregnancy - anything more than that is too much. My husband was very kind to mostly walk with me, and to run with me through all the colour bomb stations. We really did have a great time, and I would do it again every weekend if I could.
Yes it's true, I am having a baby. No I did not register another runner for my belly - I wasn't even pregnant when I registered for this thing. I just have this weird thing where I feel awkward telling people I'm pregnant. Unless you're my sister or mom who have been bugging me every time we've talked for at least a year, it doesn't usually just casually come up in conversation. So I wanted a quick and easy way to get the message out there, without posting a + pregnancy test or a sonogram photo. So I walked up to the desk and asked for a second bib, and they gave me one. Just like that. It was easy, and it was fun. This was our first family outing.

What is going on in there?
Yes this is true. Eric and I are going to have a baby.
This adventure started (well not started, but first reared it's head) on the day we got back from NYC. We flew in around noon and I felt awful (and also I lost my cell phone, so that sucked). As soon as we landed I thought I was going to be sick, and that feeling never went away. That whole week I was exhausted and could not get myself feeling okay, so matter what I tried. This was literally the worst jet lag I had ever experienced. I could not figure out what was causing it, but the more people I mentioned it to, the more I started to feel like I maybe knew exactly what it was. On Thursday night I couldn't take it anymore, and so I went to my mother-in-law to try to do some muscle testing (I really can't go in to what muscle testing is right now, it would take up way way way to much room to explain, but I think most of you close enough to me have been briefed already. Moving on). She tried to figure out what fear or negative belief could be causing nausea or fatigue, and we came up with nothing. Finally she turned to us and said "all signs point to one thing".
This was not really what we were expecting, and not really in this way. It took Eric by an unpleasant surprise at first. We had a plan, and this was not it - it was really really close to it, but just a little bit off. Eric and I both have a hard time when planning goes that way, but he was really worried this time. (Background: Eric is starting his designation for accounting in September. This means a new full time job with an accounting firm, as well as part time school in the evenings and pretty much every available second. The busy season for accountants just happens to be January-April, and well if we're due in February, you do the math.) He is concerned that our baby will land itself in our lives right at a time when he will be basically completely unavailable to our family. That's a legitimate concern, I think.
The next day was June 21. I am sick as a dog, and don't even make it to work that day. It was kind of a nice day actually. We spent most of the morning in bed. A pregnancy test waited for us on the bathroom sink; for a perfect moment when Eric and I both would be excited to see that || show up on the screen. I peed and sure enough that positive showed up literally the second it hit the stick. We are pregnant. What next? First things first. I downloaded The Bump app, and calculated how far along I was. I calculated 5 weeks. We read all about what's going on in there at 5 weeks, and it was a day I will always remember as one of my favourites.
I saw my doctor the next week, and she gave me some great reading materials, as well as a prescription of something to help with the nausea. She told me right away to choose doctor or midwives and to find and meet with one as soon as possible. I don't know how I didn't realise that being pregnant would be so serious! I knew I wanted midwives - my mom had midwives for 4 of her 7 babies, and it's just always been the experience I want. I filled out every intake form for every midwife practice I could find in the city of Calgary, and then I waited. Slowly one by one the emails starting coming in saying "Thank you for your application. We are full, but your name has been added to a waiting list." Then I got a phone call at the beginning of July to say that I was in with one of the groups. It was such a relief, but I couldn't even meet them until July 17th. That seemed like forever away.
Everything to do with pregnancy takes FOREVER!
I met them on the 17th with Eric, and felt kind of unsettled after the appointment. I just really didn't know what I wanted for my birthing experience, and didn't realise how many decisions needed to be made so early on. Eric and I chatted for a long time, and I told him all my fears and concerns and silly little nit picky things. He laughed, and then he comforted me (which is usually how it goes). He said he knew that the experience with midwives is what he wanted and what he wanted me to have. His mother never had midwives, and we concluded that that's why so many people choose not to take that root - it's unfamiliar. But as it becomes more widely accepted, more monitored and more accessible, he seems to think that it's the obvious choice. I didn't even think he'd care, but hearing him so certain and convinced so quickly of something (that is not like Eric or me for most big decisions) brought me comfort and we made the decision.

Morning Sickness is a misnomer. Not much happens between when you pee on the stick and choose a doctor, to when you actually see the baby on the screen. It is a lot of waiting and putting up with symptoms, with very little sign of anything glorious or miraculous. This is what I have been doing for the past 5 weeks. Nausea lasts all morning, all day and all night, at least it does for me. That's why my doctor prescribed the medication. One thing I thought about pregnancy was that cravings happen for a reason - to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to grow a baby. That's not what it's been like for me lately. I have not eaten a meal since we were in NYC. I don't know what it is, but my body cannot stand the look of any kind of food, and when any tiny bite of food makes it in, I promise you it doesn't stay there for long. I could literally keep an entire blog of the different forms of vomit I have experienced, and keep you all on your toes for weeks I'm sure, but I will not. It's supposed to end soon, and so that is all I have to say about that. Moving on.
This week was finally the first milestone. It was the first time I saw the fruits of my nausea. It was wonderful.
I wasn't 100% sure on my dates of my last period and cycle length and such, so my midwife scheduled me a dating ultrasound. That was on Monday. That was the first time we saw the baby and it's heartbeat. Eric and I went together, and it was a great few moments to share with him. The tech showed us where the heart was, and showed us how it beats. It was at 166 bpm, so apparently that's good. I did not expect to see it move around so much though. I don't know why, but with how small it is in there right now, I really thought it would be less visibly active, but it did not stop squirming and bouncing the whole time. Weird that I really can't even feel a flutter. Right now it measures about 4.5 centimeters in length, and that's about it. With the measurements she did for me, I was dated at 11 weeks and 2 days, with my due date on February 9, 2014. The absolutely great news is that it put me one week ahead of what I thought. That means one week closer to the end of my first trimester - hopefully the end of the nausea and other crummy symptoms.
Then on Friday I had a second ultrasound. This one was for a first trimester screening for chromosome related birth defects. Eric was really nervous for this one. His greatest fear in this whole process is that we will have an unhealthy or handicapped baby. I don't know why he worries so much, because chances are much greater that everything will be completely fine and perfectly "normal", and even if it weren't, I know he'd do great. He has a young cousin with special needs, and I think he sees how much work it can be for his aunt sometimes. They ran the test based on my age alone at first, and my chances of carrying a baby with down syndrome were 1/2000 something. Then they did measurements of the baby, combined it with my blood work and height and weight and everything else they could find out about me, and rand it again. My final results were 1 in over 20,000. Naturally I felt really good about this, and came out of there beaming. But when I took it to Eric, we talked about the reality of the situation: if Heavenly Father wants us to have that experience, if He believes our child needs that experience, or if He thinks that it would any way make us learn something we need to learn, we will still be that 1/20,000 and that's going to be okay too.
The last 6 weeks have been something new and exciting, but in the end we are having fun and the little lime sized thing growing inside me is perfectly healthy. We are excited!

I'm Feeling 22!
And that's because I am 22. Today was my birthday. It was a nice low key celebration that made me feel really loved by all the people around me.
I got some decorations and beautiful flowers at work today.
I don't like birthday cake, and recently I love popcorn. My mother-in-law made caramel corn for everyone. She also made one of my favourite ice cream treats and put all the candles in it.
Eric knew how disappointed I was this year about not being able to carve pumpkins. We had some left over, and they picked up a couple of more and everyone carved pumpkins together for my birthday.
I am very in to live entertainment right now. I don't know what it is, but I have really loved catching little performances all around town that I hear about mostly on CBC Radio. Eric was excited to show me a Calgary tradition, and for my present he bought me tickets to Theater Calgary's A Christmas Carol. The performance is on the 29th, and I am so excited! I can't wait.
Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes, and to my wonderful family everywhere they are who love me so much.

Some Summer Reading
Still no Internet here, so I haven't posted in a long time. Tomorrow's the day so watch for the big recap.
Today though I thought I'd toss this up here for an appetizer of sorts.
Something you may or may not know: I've never been much of a reader. There are only two series of books that I've ever been committed to (Confessions of a Shopaholic, and obviously The Hunger Games), and only two books I've ever re-read (Emma by Jane Austen, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett- also The Hunger Games will happen too).
I don't actually finish nearly as many books as I start. I usually just read to pass time, and while I do enjoy it now while I'm reading, there aren't many things that stick with me so much that I need to keep reading. Hence I usually have a few books on the go, each from different genres and for different moods. So these are the 5 that I have on the go right now.

Hence I usually have a few books on the go, each from different genres and for different moods. So these are the 5 that I have on the go right now.
(1) Emma by Jane Austen. This is a classic in my books, and one that I just can't seem to get enough of. I get lost in it every time I read it. I think Emma reminds me of me in many ways. Intelligent, but not committed enough to anything in particular. Usually mature and kind, but known to make mistake due to my conviction that I am always right. At least until I met my Mr. Knightly. My level headed husband who grounds me a little, and humbles me often (kindly of course).
(2) Shopaholic & Baby by Sophie Kinsella. As I told you, I do enjoy the Shopaholic series. I haven't read them in a few years now, but when I saw the last one that I haven't gotten to yet, for only $0.99 at the thrift store, on a day when I happened to have raging baby fever, I just had to start it and add it to the list.
(3) Jule & JuliaI by Julie Powell. When I first saw this movie, is when I decided to start blogging. It was my inspiration and my goal. I hate cooking, very very much, and don't know that it will ever be a love of mine, but I am getting a little better. I do love projects though. She needed something to fill her life with excitement and adventure and accomplishment and I know I've searched a time or two for such things; haven't we all? So I decided I should finally start reading this book, and that maybe in the process I might be inspired just enough to find something that will last.
(4) The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. This is in the self-help category of my book list. Eric and I started reading it when a friend and co-worker recommended it to him for help at work. It's all based on the concept that people are often mistaken when they assume that the next accomplishment will make them happy. His theory is that being happy, even with little things in life, leads to an attitude and path to success. Very interesting points and theories!
(5) My Life With Elvis by Becky Yancey. This is my hidden treasure of the summer. I got stuck for about an hour in a small used bookstore last night in Wolfville. I fought over and over between I think 5 or 6 books. Each were very different from the next and I could not make up my mind, and eventually just had to pick one (actually 2 because I just couldn't make it to 1). Julie&Julia was one, and this was the other. I started this one as soon as I got home, and I am in love. I love a good biography, and this is a good biography. It's written by a woman of her brief but exciting personal encounters with Elvis, and then later her longer lasting professional relationship with him and Graceland. If you like Elvis, if you like his music, or if you just find that time era fascinating (as I do), I recommend it. I'm guessing it's hard to find, and I know you'll get funny looks if you're reading in the park or on the bus or anywhere public, but it's worth it all. I promise.
***
One of my goals in life is to have a very accomplished bookshelf. One
where everyone, of all ages and all styles, can go to find a book to amuse
them; even if just for the first 20, 50 or 100 pages. That's a real goal
of mine. This may be what some of you count as an amateur or immature beginning, but hey, I'm enjoying it. If no one else does, I am going to love my bookcase someday.

Sleepover at Katherine and Eric's
A while ago when my youngest sisters first saw my apartment they thought it was the coolest thing to have a sister with her own place, so I invited them for a sleepover when school is done. Well, school is basically done, and Eric and are moving out any day now so I had to make it happen, or I'd never live it down. So yesterday Emma and I went to the store and bought some snacks and rented Princess and the Frog and Kung Fu Panda II and her and Hannah packed up their stuff to come over. On the way out Luke asked if he could come too, and I felt so dumb because I didn't think the boy would be interested. He was though, and that made me smile, so he came too.
When we got to my place last night I didn't have keys on me, and Eric doesn't get home til at least about 11:00 most nights. I called him in a frantic panic and he gave me some great advice, and we made it in okay. Then we had a smoothie and some chips and watched Princess and the Frog, to which I fell asleep in less than an hour. Then the kids must have shortly followed because no one made it to the end of the movie.
Then this morning we all watched, (awake and with Eric) Kung Fu Panda, which Eric has been very excited to see. I made German pancakes for breakfast, and then we went out on the town.
I asked in the car where they each wanted to go, and in unison we heard "The Freak Lunchbox!". So that's where we went. It was fun to see them each try to pick out something and make that tough decision. Of all the things in there, Luke got Skittles and Hannah got Whoppers. Emma got some weird squeeze gel stuff that we all made fun of her for, but then secretly liked when we each tasted it.
Sometimes I do this funny thing where I get in my head that Eric likes something a lot, when really it's just me that likes it. That happens occasionally. Most of the time though, it happens where I just think that's what I did, but the truth is he really does like it. Best example: cotton candy. I LOVE cotton candy. Love it! And every time I get it or want it, and double guess and think that Eric doesn't like it and that I just wish he did. Truth is, he does! Anyway, we got a bag of Mike 'n Ike cotton candy to share, which I am very excited about trying tonight when he gets home from work because it combines two of my very very favourite sugary treats!
I had so much fun with the kids coming over. They were really excited for it, and I think they had fun too!

Fathers' Day
It's negative, and I knew it would be. We aren't pregnant, not even close. But someday we will be, and Eric will be a great father when that day comes!
note: we are not pregnant. we are not trying. there are only two of us, and you'll know when there's a third.

Those are the times on the clock while I laid in bed wide awake and thinking silly things this morning. Don't you hate it when you're awake and the most ridiculous things are in your brain and you can't figure out how they got there or how to get rid of them because they're so stupid and distracting?
This morning's highlight: "Katherine, your stomach feels uneasy and gross. Maybe you're pregnant and just too much in denial to take a test, so you'll never know...then you'll end up fat and bloated for no reason and suddenly pop out a baby. You could be a star on that show 'I didn't know I was pregnant', or whatever it's called. How do you not know you're pregnant?! That's crazy. You could not know right now, you idiot." Weird!
Anyway, last night I went to bed early so that I could get up to go to the market this morning, and that's probably why I was so restless all night. But last night, when Eric got home and I was already asleep, he set up something beautiful that surprised me and delighted me when I got up to pee and drink at 5am.
I just love my husband. he is so good to me, and made, what may have been the weirdest and most confusing 1.5 hours of the day, Fantastic!

In the Mailbox
We got a package on Saturday from home. We new that our camera that we forgot at home was in it, that my driver's license was in it, and that Eric's medication was in it. What we didn't know is that there were treats, a sweater and a little gift from friends.
Remember how much I love these? Maybe you don't, but I love these! They're my favourite candy every, and they come all the way from Austria. Austria is where we met Rachel and Spencer. They are good friends, and I want to thank them for that, and the candy. I am going to really enjoy that! (and I guess I'll share with him too).

Lobster Mash
Last Sunday I ate lobster for the very first time. I've lived on the east coast for 5 years before now and never had the desire to try it. My husband's work team started it. They got the lobsters, they cooked the lobsters, and all I had to do was eat it. Easy? No. It was one of the most challenging and confusing culinary experiences of all my meals; as demonstrated.
It turned out good though. I hated the tail, but liked the pincers. Eric and I were quite proud of me by the end of it though. Only the ones who know me well know how much I hate meals like this one; fighting for the food through the slime and the grime. I HATE it. So trying and almost enjoying the lobster, not to shabby over all, I'd say.
The rest of the day was enjoyed in the sunshine and beautiful atmosphere of this fine city. I love our life. It is so great to be here, no matter what.

Hello Love;
This page at the top of the blog is something I've started for you and me Eric. Until something really exciting happens in our lives, this will be my daily entry.
We will celebrate our 1 year anniversary on April 30th this year. Every day of April I've chosen a picture and written a little message to you; just things to help us remember the good things about this year so that the celebration can be about only those.
I think you're a wonderful husband, and there are things that have happened, since I met you, that I always want to remember; things we've done together, and things you've done for me. You are the one I love most of all. They say the first year is the hardest. Let's hope that's true, and be excited about what's to come for us!
Happy almost one year anniversary Love.

Finding Money in Your Pocket
Isn't almost the most exciting feeling? I wish it could happen to me all the time.
Today Eric went looking through a file in his parents' filing cabinet. He was looking for a T4 for one of his summer jobs to file his taxes. What he found was much more exciting. This is the paper he found.
$377 worth of it. They must have been left over from his mission or a trip he took or something. No one can remember exactly what, but boy were we happy. Talk about finding money you hid and forgot about. It was an exciting night for us.
Now we'll have to plan something nice!

Monday Mornings
This morning was a long one. Last night Eric and I got to bed and fell right to sleep. We weren't even in pijamas yet. We woke up again at 10:50 and I asked Eric what time it was. He said "ten to one" and I was floored, and then when he corrected himself I felt just a little better about us. Then we fell asleep again and the next time we woke up it was five to one. Oh man. So we got up and went to the bathroom got a drink did all that and went back to bed.
Needless to say, Eric was not ready for this morning's alarm at 5:30am. The alarm on his phone (which is his sister-in-law's old phone) rings for one minute before it snoozes itself. Her selection of music on there consists only of one album of the Backstreet Boys and one of Dashboard Confessional. This morning we heard the first minute of this song play every 10 minutes from 5:30am to around I think 8:30am when Eric got up to start getting ready for school.
I liked this song a little, and now I dislike it a lot. I much preferred being woken up with a kiss and snuggle from my husband when we came back a little while later. I want to wake up like that every morning.

I Love You Too
I've had a frustrating few days this past week. Looking for jobs is so hard and it's especially overwhelming when we just keep finding more and more things we can't afford that I am supposed to be paying for for us. It's scary.
But my husband has taken good care of me, and this is what I woke up to this morning after he'd gone to school.
A Little message of encouragement on top of my computer (where I spend the majority of my time these days). With peanut M&Ms, which are delicious.
I love You Too Eric. Thank You.
