On Being Pregnant

I first found out I was pregnant because of how sick I was feeling, and it didn't stop there. When I first found out I started to do some reading and was found out that the nausea comes from raging hormones, and was relieved only when I saw that these symptoms are supposed to subside in the second trimester. Every woman's pregnancy is different, and there is a huge range of symptoms to be experienced. Mine has been the morning (noon and night) sickness. (Please don't get me wrong, I know that I am not alone in this, and I know that I don't have it any worse than any other woman, I am just telling my story.)
I am very grateful for Diclectin these days, although even it hasn't really done the trick. I always assumed before all this that the body would crave what it needed while I was pregnant, and that it would reject some things as well. That doesn't seem to be the case, unless my baby really only needs water and pills to survive. You honestly would not believe how many different kinds of puke there actually are. I don't mean to be graphic, and I usually am not, but seriously! Every time was something new, and it shocked me every time. My husband has been amazing through the whole thing though. Every time he knew the three things I needed, and he was right there with them out of no where. He always cleaned my bucket out for me, and he always rubbed me and held me afterward. It doesn't matter how many times a day, a week, a month I get sick, each time is just as bad as that last. I still haven't gotten used to it, and it still takes courage for me to let myself be sick, instead of holding it in. Eric has been there for me each and every single time (unless he's out of the house) and it has been so nice.
In the first 13 weeks, the only meal I can remember eating and enjoying was a steak and corn on the cob, with delicious fruit for dessert. We ate at a friend's place, and it was the happiest day in weeks. I used to hate red meat, and could only stomach chicken. Now the thought of any kind of poultry makes me sick, and I haven't eaten chicken (except chicken nuggets for some reason) since NYC. Now the sight of red meat raw in the grocery store almost turns me on. It's a bizarre world.

Here is a picture of me at about 12 weeks.

Here is another picture at about 14 weeks.
I am almost 16 weeks now, and I tell you the belly size is not the only thing that has changed dramatically. I feel 100% better than I did. I can't even explain the turn around, it has been incredible. Each time I told someone who had already been pregnant about how sick I had been I got the same reaction: I hope that goes away soon for you, but you know some women are sick for their entire pregnancies. Thanks ladies, that was a big help and a great comfort. Ha. But now that I am out of my first trimester, and actually starting to feel better I am so grateful that it seems like I am not going to be one of those women. I am so grateful to be able to eat again. Granted my whole appetite has not come back yet, but just knowing that anything I eat is not going to come back up again is a big relief when making food decisions.
I am still feeling a bit queezy every morning, but I haven't thrown up in over a week and it feels great! The only thing I am now is tired, and I can totally live with that. I love naps, and I love my bed so I am okay with this as is for now!
The greatest part about not feeling sick anymore is being able to focus on growing a baby. I lost 5 pounds in my first trimester, and now is my time to get it all back. I am excited about the things that are ahead. With so many upcoming landmarks (such as feeling the baby move, meeting with my midwives, another ultra sound, finding out the gender etc.) I am really enjoying being pregnant and getting excited. I love reading each week where my baby is on the growth scale, and what he/she is up to in there. I am actually starting to get excited about silly things like strollers and car seats and blankets and onsies. I am really started to get excited about our baby and our future little family, and it is bringing a great joy to me and our home.
